FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE - On Kaulagarh Road, northwest of the city center, lays the Forest Research Institute. Established in 1906 by the British, the institute is committed to the preservation of India’s varied but threatened flora and fauna. Stretching over extensive grounds covered with innumerable species of India’s forest wealth, it is the largest forest based product-training institute in Inida. It also serves as the training school for forest officers in India. With Mussoorie ridge as its background, the institute houses six museums open to the public on weekdays, displaying some of the finest species of flora and fauna found in India. They also house insects, furniture, wood samples, wildlife and few stuffed animals beside a library and bookshop. The institute is among the best institues in the world on forest science and covering almost all the aspects associated with forests and wildlife in India.
ROBBER’S CAVE - Also known as Guchu Pani, situated 8 kms from the center of the city, Robber’s cave is a beautiful picnic spot. One can witness here one of the nature’s strange phenomena of a stream of water going underground and reappearing a few meters away. The cave, surrounded by hills, is a beautiful getaway for those aspiring for peace and calmness of the hills. Buses are available up to the Anarwala village, only a kilometer away from the cave.
TAPOVAN - Tapovan is a holy site, 5 kms from the city centre, located on the Dehradun-Rajpur Road in the picturesque Doon valley. As per legends Guru Dronacharya, the Guru (instructor) of warfare to Kauravas and Pandavas, underwent his reparation here.
TAPKESHWAR TEMPLE - Situated 5.5 km from the city centre, in the Garhi Cantonment area, is the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple. A cave temple on the banks of a seasonal river devoted to Lord Shiva is the only major temple in Dehradun. By the river are steps leading to a cave in which water trickles from the ceiling on a shivling, giving the temple its name ’Tapkeshwar’. Legends has it that Lord Shiva made milk to gush from this cave for,the son of Guru Dronacharya, Ashwathama.
DAKPATHAR - Dakpathar, 45 km away from Dehradun, lies in the western Doon valley. With its lush green lawns and blossoming gardens, THE Yamuna Hydel Scheme, is a major tourist attraction in the region. The vast stretches of Yamuna and the rugged Shivalik range add grandeur to the place. Arrangements a stay in the tourist bungalow here, commanding a beautiful view of the area can be made. There are regular buses ply from Dehradun to this charming place. Five kms before Dakpathar is Kalsi, renowned for an Ashokan pillar. and an Ashokan Rock edict, built in 250 BC.
